ishUES is a new virtual program series presented by ish Festival to connect artists with communities to explore Jewish and Israeli arts and culture together during these challenging times. All ishUES programs are remote/virtual, which means you can learn something new right from the comfort of your couch (while wearing your fav pjs :)).

Monday, November 9 @ 7:30pm Join ish & the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center as we feature Opening the Ark Project in observance of Kristallnacht. Artist Shmuel Polin and his woodworking & design team will lead an interactive workshop featuring their work in rebuilding a great wooden ark of Polish-Lithuanian Jewry. Jodi Elowitz of the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center will share the history of Kristallnacht and museum artifacts.

October ishUE: Emily Bowen Cohen, Member of Two Tribes
Wednesday, October 14 @ 7:30pm Join ish special guest and Los Angeles-based comic artist, Emily Bowen Cohen (Member of Two Tribes), as she shares her unique family history and personal stories from growing up as a Jewish Native American woman. Grab a drink (or snack!) and join ish and Emily as she shares how her unique, blended family background helped shape her identity from childhood through to her adult life. THIS PROGRAM IS INTERACTIVE!! Emily will share her incredible comic art illustrations and walk you through meaningful and interactive creative exercises on identity formation and identity mapping. You're in for a treat!!
In honor and celebration of Indigenous People's Day, October 12th (but we really don't need an excuse!!) Emily Bowen Cohen lives in Los Angeles, CA. She won a WORD artist grant in 2016 to create the mini-comic, An American Indian Guide to the Day of Atonement. She was an Inquiry fellow at American Jewish University and also participated in the Reciprocity retreat through Asylum Arts. September ishUE: Julie Pentelnik Virtual Studio Visit with Northern Hills Synagogue
Wednesday, September 16 @ 11am Join ish and Northern Hills Synagogue as we take a behind the studio door tour with Cincinnati painter and Judaica artist, Julie Pentelnik. In conversation with ish Executive & Artistic Director, Marie Krulewitch-Browne, Julie will take us behind the scenes of what it takes to create a traditional Ketubah (Jewish marriage certificate). Artist and calligrapher Julie Staller-Pentelnik has been creating Judaic Art for more than 20 years. Julie’s works include original and printed Ketubot, Judaic themed originals, limited edition prints and different items of Judaica. Julie uses bold colorfast inks and watercolor techniques to give her work a flowing feel with added depth and vibrancy. Fusing her painting and calligraphic skills, elements from nature and Judaism combine with text and quotations to create pieces of art that celebrate and reflect contemporary Jewish life.
